City of Gold Coast now runs bulky waste collection on demand through FLEXiSKiP instead of the old scheduled kerbside clean-up. Eligible households get one collection per financial year, and it's often described as "free". It isn't quite. Here's what it actually costs, what fits, who can't use it, and when you'll need to look elsewhere.
What FLEXiSKiP actually is
Instead of council trucks doing a scheduled sweep of every street once a year, Gold Coast residents now book a drop-and-collect skip through the council's service provider, Handel Group, whenever they need it. You set up an online account, book a date, load the skip yourself, and it gets collected. One booking is included per eligible household each financial year (July to June) — previously the allowance reset each calendar year.
It's a genuine improvement on the old system for anyone who missed their street's single annual pickup window. But it comes with a size cap, a booking process, and fees that don't get much airtime.
What it actually costs
There's no council fee to be eligible, but the booking itself isn't free. Handel Group charges a $50 service fee (GST included) per collection. If the skip isn't accessible for pickup on the booked day — blocked by a car, put out too early or late, or left further than 4 metres from the kerb — there's a $65 failed collection fee. Load it with anything outside the accepted list and a contamination fee applies on top, calculated by item type and quantity.

The size cap
The FLEXiSKiP is a heavy-duty 3 cubic metre, 1 tonne capacity skip container, roughly 1m high by 2.2m long by 1.4m wide. That's enough for a garage clean-out or a room or two of old furniture. It's well short of what a whole-house clear-out, a deceased estate, or a renovation strip-out produces — those jobs routinely run 8–20 m³. Who isn't eligible
FLEXiSKiP isn't available to every Gold Coast address. It excludes:
- High-rise and unit complexes that already have a bulk bin service.
- Complexes with more than 10 units or lots.
- Rural properties outside standard council waste collection.
- Island communities.
- Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove resort complexes.
If your building falls into one of those categories, the council's alternative is the Bulky Kerbside Remission Program, introduced in April 2026. It's aimed at Community Title Scheme and body corporate buildings: a body corporate representative applies first (approval takes up to 21 days), then books a private bulky waste collection and submits a reimbursement claim within 90 days. It's a rebate on a private service, not a free collection, and it's only available at the body corporate level — individual unit owners can't apply for it themselves.
FLEXiSKiP vs junk removal
For a small, straightforward load once a year, FLEXiSKiP is genuinely good value at $50. Where it stops making sense:
- Volume. Anything over 3m³ needs a second skip, a second $50 fee, or a different service entirely — you only get one FLEXiSKiP per financial year.
- Labour. You still load the skip yourself. Junk removal crews carry it out, including from upstairs, sheds and awkward access.
- Timing. Booking, loading and collection can take longer than a same-day quote and pickup.
