The cubic-metre rule
Junk is priced by volume, not by item. One cubic metre is about a fridge plus a single bed mattress plus two garbage bags — roughly the boot of a station wagon stacked to the roof. From there, prices scale up linearly. A typical ute-load of furniture is 2–3 m³. A garage clear-out is usually 4–6 m³. A whole-house clear-out can run 10–20 m³ or more.
Volume pricing only stops working on dense loads. A truck full of soil, concrete or roof tiles will hit the legal weight limit before it's anywhere near full, so those loads are quoted by tonne instead.
What changes the price
Five things move the number on a Gold Coast quote:
- Volume. The dominant factor. More cubes = more truck time + more disposal.
- Weight. Soil, rubble, concrete, tiles and bricks tip the load into per-tonne territory.
- Access. Multi-storey walk-ups, narrow side gates, long carries from the back of a property and tight body-corp loading docks add labour time.
